Inclusive, encouraging, and worker-centered policies should be the backbone of any cooperative personnel framework. In democratic workplaces, “Human Resources” are centered around the relationships we have with each other, with our labor and with our communities at large. How do we ensure that our workplaces embody our true values since we are, in effect, our own bosses? Putting our whole selves back at the center of personnel forces us to examine our workplace practices on everything from raising families, and taking vacation time, to sustaining emotional and mental health, accessing health benefits, garnishing living wages and overtime pay, and valuing all of the work we really do by compensating workers for tasks that are sometimes devalued. In this workshop we will look at concrete examples of creative HR policies that co-ops are using to be masters of our own working and living conditions.
