Thomas A. Beckett lives with his family in Hendersonville, North carolina. He is an attorney, MBA and entrepreneur. Through Mountain South Business Law, his law practice, Beckett offers guidance to small and startup businesses ranging from software and technology ventures to agricultural enterprises. He is one of the few attorneys in the region with knowledge of cooperative businesses and worker ownership as well as other forms of social enterprise. He is intensely interested in creative, sustainable business, grassroots economic development, and authentic experience. He is a principal in Ownership Appalachia, devoted to developing worker-owned and other cooperative enterprises in Southern Appalachia. Beckett co-founded Meet the Geeks, Inc., a nonprofit that fosters the economic and professional development of the information technology industry in Western North carolina. He has similarly served as Vice Chair and legal advisor to the Media Arts Project. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Participatory Change, and the Hendersonville Community Co-op. Beckett has taught Business Law at Warren Wilson College and is certified to present the FastTrac TechVenture program, an entrepreneurial training curruculum aimed at fostering high impact businesses, and lectures regularly on small business legal issues.
